Dear Friends,
Many challenges are facing Serendipity Stables this November. The last few days of October and the first few days of November, all the
horses, except Jewel and Maille, came down with the flu. I am
especially thankful to Carol Mock, Sally and Al Eble for spending a day treating these horses.

Sweet Adeline was the most ill of all and had to take antibiotics. Then she began to colic and Dr. Marilou Rings discovered that Sweet Adeline has developed a toxic reaction to her pain medication (Bute), and she also has an ulcer. We had to take her off her pain medication and Sweet Adeline lay down and ceased to function. She stopped using her weak leg, causing her good leg to begin to give
out.

Meanwhile, Dr. Rings was frantically researching pain medications that do not compromise the digestive track. She found a dog medication (EtoGesic) which seemed promising. The Vets at the Ohio State University worked out the dosage for horses. Because Sweet Adeline is much larger than a dog, she must have 30 pills a day. She got her first 30 pills Friday, November 3, as she lay in her stall. Fifteen
minutes later she jumped up and asked for supper. She continues to improve.

The challenge is financial. One bottle of 90 tablets cost $150. We are currently accepting donations from anyone willing to help with her medication costs.

Sincerely,
Michele
